Voices Against Objectification

Cynthia Nakato and Yvonne Babirye are identical twin sisters, Ugandan activists, and co-authors of Political Objectification: #BangTheTwins.
They are not career writers. Their book was born out of necessity, written as an act of survival and resistance after they were objectified, silenced, and erased by those in positions of power.
For over four years, they have used their lived experiences to amplify conversations on gender-based violence, women’s dignity, and shrinking civic space in Uganda.
They were frontliners in the #March2Parliament protests (2024), demanding accountability for corruption and better governance. Their courage and refusal to be silenced has made them both voices of resistance and survivors of digital violence and public objectification.
Their memoir, Political Objectification: #BangTheTwins, is a bold and raw account of gendered humiliation in political and legal spaces. Reviewed by the Daily Monitor, Uganda’s leading newspaper.
Beyond Activism

Cynthia is the founder of CY Crochet, a handmade crochet brand born in Uganda. Each piece carries a story of resilience, patience, and artistry. With every stitch, she affirms the strength of women who transform thread into powerful symbols of independence and creativity. What may appear as simple clothing becomes a declaration of dignity and self-determination.
The workshop is more than a space for crochet it is a space of empowerment. Here, women gather not only to create, but to reclaim confidence, to support one another, and to celebrate the value of their work. The clothes crafted in this workshop are living proof that women’s labor is not invisible; it is essential, beautiful, and transformative.
By merging activism with creativity, Cynthia and Yvonne demonstrate that justice is not confined to streets, rallies, or courtrooms. It is also woven into the everyday acts of building, making, and sustaining. In every crochet design, they remind us that empowerment is as much about artistry as it is about advocacy, and that true dignity is found in both.
